City CouncilGreetings from Mayor Ronald L. Irish As Mayor of the City of Porterville, I look forward to working with you in navigating the current economic challenges facing our city. These challenges are just that -- challenges and not insurmountable obstacles. We have all the ingredients to make a viable community even better, one filled with volunteerism, optimism and strong diversity accompanied with a vibrant Chamber led by Donnette Carter. We have a professional city staff directed by Mr. John Lollis, and a Council who are truly concerned with the City of Porterville. Future projects call for the very best from all of us. I, too, promise that I will give Porterville the best that I have to offer. I am really excited with Porterville's potential in maintaining a viable community, even in this economy. Many of us in our community have worked diligently for decades, and we know full well that our endeavors today may not be seen for many years. It is not the government that drives our community, it is our citizens. Some of the most recent developments have taken years to complete, as do many things worth the work and the wait. For instance, Centennial Park was merely a concept back in 2004 when the original Nelson Building was demolished. We could only imagine the park that would be developed which would include a stage and gazebo for community gatherings. This was accomplished with the help of organizations and groups like Bank of the Sierra, Porterville Rotary clubs, Home Depot, Tulare County Youth Corps, and others. Almost 6 years later, Centennial Park is now a reality and has far exceeded our expectations in providing an inviting gathering place for community events -- Music on Main, AMGEN 2010 Tour of California, professional offices, restaurant facilities, and a comfortable seat for downtown merchants and patrons. One of the focal points of the park is a great tribute to Frank "Buck" Shaffer with the "Time Marches On" clock, also purchased and installed through community donations. A major development taking years to reach fruition was the recent acquisition by the State of California of the former Porterville Fairgrounds property. This 7.4 acre site is the future home of the South County Justice Center, which will be a 90,000 sq. ft. building, with a $90 million cost, adding approximately 100 new support staff. Additionally, other affiliated services will develop, such as attorneys' offices, messenger services, and other court-related businesses. As a result of this property acquisition, the Porterville Fair will now move to their new location near the airport that will give the Fair ample room for exhibitors of livestock, agricultural products, handicrafts, community entertainment, and provide a venue for local community groups to participate in community service. In spite of challenging times, additional retail opportunities are also in our near future, which have been the product of years of planning, providing appropriate infrastructure, and working with developers to laud the positive aspects of locating in Porterville. My message relating to recent developments shows a long-standing commitment of the Porterville City Council, the city staff and the entire community. Our diversity and unity make us strong and committed to continuing to improve the quality of life for our community. We are excited about today and our future. |
